  Metal Threads

Since Biblical times, metal threads have been used to decorate the garments of royalty, as well as ecclesiastical and ceremonial items.

The threads are refered to in both English - Purl - and French - Bullion. We have Purl, Check Purl, Pearl Purl, Spangles and hard to find threads such as Faconnee Brilliant, Cordonnet, Passing Thread and Metallics.

Gilt Sylke Twist

This is the silk thread wrapped with gold wire that is being used in the Plimouth Plantation embroidery project. The gilt thread accent may look subtle - but wait until you see it sparkle in the light!

Bullion/Purl

Smooth Purl is made by wrapping a flattened wire around a round needle. It looks like a tiny, shiny spring. Rough Purl is also made by wrapping wire around a round form, but using round wire to produce a dull finish.

Frieze/Check Purl

Check Purl is produced by wrapping the wire onto a square mold. The angles cause the wire to sparkle.

Jaceron/Pearl Purl

Pearl Purl looks like a tiny string of pearls.

Spangles/Paillettes

Flat sequins made in the same way as in the Middle Ages. A "bead" of wire is cut and then flattened in a press.

Specialty Threads

Passing thread, twists, tambour thread in gilt or silver-plate will all add sparkle to your work.
